ARTIST PROFILE

Merryn Apma

I am part of the Stolen Generation. The layers of trauma still run so deep. Through painting my journey is kept alive. My art honours my people, my community and the strong women who have taken care of our country for over 50,000 years. It shows how far my people have come and how resilient we are.I capture the memory of the beautiful country that runs through my veins. The deserts, the flowers, the waterholes and the people. I strive to create a legacy for my children and my grandchildren, passing on my culture and giving them hope. Through the BFX Ninderry Range I am able to connect with and inspire my people. It brings me healing. I feel I have a voice.

"Waterholes"

The desert is a very dry and vast country. Water is very precious to our people due to lack of rain. This painting shows the special waterholes that are sacred to our people and have healing purposes. Around the waterholes you can see the colours of the desert, the tracks, the spinifex and the camps. Water should never be taken for granted.

"Elements"

This painting depicts the different elements of weather patterns in the desert. The rain, the thunder, the lightning and the harsh Australian sun beaming down on Mother Earth. It shows the changing colours of the land across the Central Desert that my people have adapted to.
